The riffs sit somewhere between such greats as Melvins, Cough, and St. Vitus while the vocals go from a vomit spewing gurgle to a more straight forward style used by Electric Wizard, Yob and other such necro-crooners. These guys easily carry the torch of EHG and Grief, and that is honestly all I want. So many "sludge/doom" bands nowadays get called that because they're slow. Get your fucking synths outta here, we're trying to hate everything.

After ripping my Post Teens demo and editing it all down to be posted, I found out that the whole thing is available for download from the label (and it sounds a lot better). Regardless of feeling like I wasted my time, I decided to just repost their download link. None of that is important though. What is important are the sounds found on the tape (or folder). What we have is pop punk of the highest order. I'm not talking about 5th generation Ramones rip-offery (although that can be a good thing), I'm talking more about the garage pop goodness of bands such as The Marked Men.

Unlike most other genres of music, when it comes to Shoegaze I feel that very few modern bands live up to the greatness of the originators. One new band that I feel is fucking incredible though, is Whirr.I could go a on a big rant about how great they are, but I'll just give you the facts. They ride catchy ass songs that were mainly recorded live. The recording process give them a vibe that really puts them over the top. Also, the last song on this EP ("Sandy") is the equivalent of falling endlessly through a black hole that in reality is the center of all love and beauty.
They just got signed to Tee Pee records and have released a 7'' . The EP I posted is available on cassette and vinyl here (<---only US distro for the vinyl.)

When the newest album (Nature Tries Again) came out, I decided to give them another shot, and I'm really glad I did. The album totally slayed me. The combo of the raw BM and hints of such things as post punk really hooked me. Anyway, all that gushing leads in to todays post. Recently, RB made their debut live appearance, and it happened to be on the My Castle of Quiet show on the mighty, mighty WFMU. I can't even begin to explain exactly what it is that these guys do, but whatever it is, it works. Somehow this almost reminds me of newer Enslaved without the clean vocals, mostly just because of the vaguely "proggy" aspects, but don't let that sway you into thinking this is some wimpy, frilly shirt-wearing horseshit. This is powerful, obscure, occult music of the highest order and rests comfortably in my top 5 of 2011 so far. Can't fucking WAIT for the full length.

Rob Brown Ultra Rare Mix Tape 1

The apparent story behind these mixes is that Rob Brown (of the due Autechre) left a cd-r of these lying around the Warp Records office and some intern just ripped them and started sharing the files. This isn't just another collection of Autechre bleep and bloop mindfuck jams. Nope, this is strictly some "chill the fuck out while I spin some classic obscure rap songs that you have probably never heard" stuff, with a dash of crazy mixing filters. These are great jams for a Saturday morning cleaning session before good bros and broettes come over before moving to The Windy City.

When I first heard 16, I really didn't care for them. I remember when I first was introduced to the wonderful world of music blogs. One of, if not the first one I ever visited was the almighty Cosmic Hearse. One of the first post I ever saw there was the collection of ZZ Top LP rips. The reason they existed in the first place was the Warner Bros. had ZZ Top change up their back catalog for their debut CD release to be more in line with their Eliminator album. Knowing that, so great souls decided to rip the original LP releases to keep their Texas boogie woogie as kvlt as possible.
Recently, I have been listening to less "heavy" music and more of the classic jammers. Maybe because I'm now a dad, or maybe because a lot of newer stuff isn't really doing it for me, but I would rather listen to "El Diablo" instead of slammy jamz about slaughtering stuff. Anyway, since I have been doing that, I decided to go back to Cosmic Hearse and get the ZZ Top rips. However, to my dismay, many of them are no longer available there. So, asking around to people I know, I was able to get all the original rips from CH and have decided to share them with you. This is a compilation lp that came out last year that featured 100 bands (including one of mine). The guy who put this out caught a lot of flack for numerous things (including the boring as shit cover), but I will always give him props for getting a 100 band comp together and actually pressed in less than a year. You would probably guess by the fact that it has 100 bands on it that you're not going to being getting epic prog jams about elves or something very stereotypical when talking about prog. If you did guess the above sentence, then you are right. Nothing here but a bunch (and I do mean a bunch) of to the point ball stomping jams (and a moment of silence). I know the guy who put this out still has a ton of copies, but he has pretty much disappeared from the 'net. Sure, they are on that label, have that cover done by that guy and kind of sound like the modern era of that band, but this album absolutely kills. Anyway, back to this great film. This movie basically sums up every over the top example of 80s metal. Tons of second (and third) rate bands from the era who are convinced they will be the next Poison or Motley Crue. There is more than that though. You get to see Ozzy cook, Paul Stanley be a fucking jag, Chris Holmes from WASP drunk as shit and Dave Mustaine recording vocals. This is basically everything about metal that punks in the 80s hated. This is not one to be missed.

This is the first film of BT's Movie Week to not be a documentary of musicians. It is, however, about fans of musicians. In fact, it's about fans of a particular format used by musicians, the 8 Track tape. This was filmed in the mid 90s, when people could still do stuff like collect 8 tracks and it be seen as something quirky instead of annoying (aka pre-"hipster" days). Well, if you have always wondered why people collect somewhat pointless things, this is for you. I actually did find this an enjoyable watch and found out some neat stuff about the history of 8 Track tapes.

Dazzling Killmen - Face Of Collapse

Whenever I here people talk about 90s metalcore (the dissonant aggro kind, not the kind that sounds like a mash up of constant double kick and Iron Maiden harmonies) /hardcore, I never hear Dazzling Killmen mentioned. In fact, the only time I have heard them mentioned is when I read someone saying that when they first heard Dillinger Escape Plan (Under...era) they thought they were a DK rip off. Seeing as how most people think of that era of Dillinger as a nothing more than Deadguy worship, you should kind of know what you are getting into with this album. Maybe it was the label they were on (Skin Graft), or the fact that they sounded like a band that fucked with time signatures trying to play hardcore instead of the other way around. Perhaps they don't get that much love because they didn't just sound super pissed all the time. Regardless of others not talking about this band, you can get this and talk about how awesome and under appreciated it is.

Fancy Mike - Sigma Chi Primavera

I downloaded this strictly because of the super awesome cover and was surprised by how much I dug it. This, in case you didn't see the tag on the bottom, is electronic music. Not in the "I'm all dark and wubwubwub and heavy" way, but more in the "I wanna have fun and dance and jam shit that sometimes reminds me of the bumper music used by Adult Swim" way. This is good music for good times, and apparently Fancy Mike is only around 19 in age. If you dig it and want to get a better quality copy of it, visit his bandcamp.

EC8OR - All Of Us Can Be Rich

I remember seeing EC8OR on the Digital Hardcore US tour of '97 with Atari Teenage Riot and Shizuo. I guess they didn't think they were already loud as shit, as they decided to point the stage monitors into the crowd (where they were aimed the rest of the show). A friend that when with me decided not to wear ear plugs, and literally had his ears full of blood after the show. Ah, good times.
Anyway, EC8OR were one of the first acts on DHR. To me, they always had more of a punk rock shakiness about them (and I mean that in a good way). Enjoy.

When this originally dropped, I was in 10th grade jamming the shit out of The Vindictives or something. When I finally got around to hearing it a few years ago, it was like being punched in the face with a fist made up of depression and anger (aka my 20's). Mount Eerie - Lost Wisdom

There are certain records that, while you may not point to them automatically as a "favorite record", end up sneaking up on you when you realize that you don't dislike a single song. Mount Eerie's Lost Wisdom is one of those records for me.
While some may find the somber, quiet music held within to be sad, I hear it the same way I hear black metal (the influence of which is apparent throughout, down to the album title sharing it's name with a Burzum song.) Themes of Nature and loss blend with sparse, yet beautiful tones to create an actual atmosphere, something sadly lost in a lot of music.
Most often a solo venture, Phil Elverum is here joined by Julie Doiron (Eric's Trip) and Frederick Squire. The trade-off in the vocal department definitely sets this album apart from the rest of the Mount Eerie catalog and, for me, elevates it above the rest, as well.

Lycus - Demo

Another bandcamp post. This time it's one of my favorite recent releases (I say "release" though I'm pretty sure this hasn't even seen a physical release as of this posting.)
Lycus is a new funeral doom project featuring the drummer of Deafheaven on drums and vocals. Fans of the obvious greats like Asunder should be very pleased with this demo. Three songs of heavy, beautiful misery. Deep growls and clean, chant-like vocals. Just utter misery and greatness. I can't tell you how excited I am for this to actually get a release so I can hold it in my hands and, like, cry or something.

Dopethrone - Dark Foil

So what if they're named after an Electric Wizard album? And so what if their vocalist is a dead ringer for Dave from Weedeater? Do they truly match up to either? Well, no, not really, but for me, there's simply something that draws me to this band. Their first record, Demonsmoke, didn't really catch my attention, but Dark Foil is a vast improvement. This record doesn't really sound that different stylistically, but the production is better and the songs seem to have more power than before. Essentially you already know what this sounds like just by reading the band name / album title, but if you don't mind a little lack of originality in your dumb sludge metal, and if you like raspy, damn-near black metal-ish vocals, heavy as shit jams, and lots of rad samples (the cop who ate the weed brownies makes in appearance in the first song, much to my delight) then give this a shot. Preferably while smoking volcanic dope. Or something.

Down - NOLA

Okay, okay, so I know this one isn't really that obscure or anything and it goes against the usual flow of my posting (i.e. it's not GRIM OCCVLTIK BLACK FVKKING METAL OV DEATH and shit) but goddamn if this isn't a great record. The next time some know-nothing dickhead tries to tell you that worthless garbage like Kings of Leon or My Morning Jacket are the new coming of southern rock, shove something large and jagged up their ass and then refer them to this little slice of sweet potato pie. That'll shut their stupid little mouth.
For those not in the know, Down is a supergroup featuring members of Pantera, Corrosion of Conformity, Crowbar, and Eyehategod who play music that sounds like all of those bands put together. Nothing less than the highest quality southern sludge/rock. Every single song has at least two killer riffs in it and Anselmo's vocals are fucking impeccable. Plus there's a song with a sample of a bong being ripped on it. I think that probably sums it up better than whatever the fuck else I've babbled about here.

I came across this on one of many forums I waste my free time on. It was described as "one of the heaviest releases of all time", so I gave it a shot. Although I don't agree with that description, I was really surprised by what I heard. Seriously intense, dark hardcore. Not dark in the way of "We own the first Cursed album and it's very obvious." way, but more in the "Life is short, life is shit, and soon it will be over." way. If all Irish hardcore is a good as this then I have some serious exploring to do.

One again Bloodtransmission presents a record recorded at the wrong speed. Unlike the Dazig album posted earlier, this version of the self titled Floor album actually has a major league difference. If you have heard the originalversion, then you know that this album is HEAVY. Take that and slow it down, and not only do you have something heavier, but you have something destructive. We should all blow our speakers to this in tribute to one of the most underrated
bands ever (even with all the recent reunion hype).

Extortion - Terminal Cancer

Not to long ago, Extortion were the darlings of internet hardcore. Not to say that people don't still like them, but recently I have noticed people trying to get rid of their numerous non full legnth releases like they were poisonous.One of those releases I never see people trying to get rid of is the one being posted today, and for good reason. On this release, Extortion left behind their more "polished" sound and recorded it with a Yamaha MT3X cassette recorder.This shit is raw in the best way possible. Sounds super pissed and ready to kick your teeth in, the way hardcore is meant to sound.

Bohren & Der Club of Gore - Black Earth

This isn't a post for people looking for a leak of the new whatever the fuck they are looking for. This is for people who check blogs to be exposed to new stuff. The reason I say this is the Bohren... has been around for a bit and I'm sure most folks know a bit about them. If you have never heard them, you are quite possibly in for a treat. Bohren..., despite the cover, is in no way metal. Nor are they "doom jazz" as many an asshole has called them. Just because something is slow doesn't make it doom. That is so annoying. Anyway, play a slow tempo, brooding instrumental music. The only reference point I can give is parts of the Twin Peaks soundtrack, but more dense and actually downright creepy at times. This music is good for listening and trying to absorb every bit of, but it also works for those late nights where you need some good background sounds to bring the night to a slow, haunting halt.

Anhedonist - The Drear

When I was first told about this band, they were said to be a now of days Asunder. Even though after hearing them I didn't agree, I still think they are head and shoulders above most bands of the doom/death ilk. This is their 3 song demo, and it's a crusher. It does seem that they learned the one thing most bands that play slow learn. That is, it's kind of boring to play super slow live. Seems their newer songs kind of have a little bit more mid tempo death going on, but with chords and progressions that keep them in the doom camp. As I have probably stated before, I was really into the whole Digital Hardcore sound when it first starting making (small) waves in the US. I actually saw the DHR tour in '97 that contained the first artist of the label. In between EC8OR and Atari Teenage Riot was an artist I wasn't that familiar with. That artist was Shizuo. I remember really enjoying his set, but I never got any of his albums. The main reason was that in my area (pre-internet) shit was really hard to find. Now that the future is now, don't force yourself to wait years to finally hear this album. It's nowhere near the sloganeering of ATR or minimalism of EC8OR. This actually has more in common with beats that just throw you against the wall and shank your pink ass in broad daylight. Heavy as fuck, but still danceable. That is, if you dance like a total spazz weirdo (and I know you do).

If you were to dismiss Loomer as just another Shoegazer-come-lately, I honestly couldn't blame you. I mean, they did name themselves after one of the greatest songs on one of the greatest albums by one of the greatest bands of the entire genre. If thinking that about them caused you to not check it out, then you would be missing out. Even though their is an element of Shoegaze going on, when I listen to this album I have bands such as Sonic Youth and the criminally underrated Unwound enter my mind. Also at times their is an element of Loop in the mix as well. I could sit here and type out bands to try to get you to want to check this out, but instead I'm just gonna say that you should. Why? Because you're gonna like it. And as a cherry on top, I'm going to tag it as a Shoegaze album.

Iron Lung Mixtape

I'm 99.9% sure that I originally got this from Terminal Escape, so major league thanks to them. If you haven't been to that blog, check it out. Tons and tons of cassette demo (and actual releases) rips that sound great.
On to the music. Longish story short, this is a mix that the guys in Iron Lung did to showcase bands on their label (Iron Lung Records) and a few "friends of the family". If you are familiar with Iron Lung, you probably have a good idea of what you are in for. Don't think it's all just Power Violence type stuff though, or you might miss the incredible synth punk of Total Control (Seriously, the 7'' they put out on ILR is so good. They have a full length coming out soon that I am so stoked for). I'm not gonna list all the bands on it but here are a few names...Iron Lung, Cold Sweat, Total Control, Slices, Mind Eraser, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Walls and Running For Cover. If even one of those names mean anything to you, then you need to get this.

Since this got a really nice reissue on LP recently, I thought I would post it. Jerusalem originally put this out in 1972 and probably blew some minds with these songs. Although not as heavy as some others around this time, Jerusalem had a non hokey swag to their songs. When they did try to heavy it up, they produced a pretty monstrous song of the name Primitive Man (which kills). Just to make sure that this fits in with every write up of this album, I have to tell you it was produced by Ian Gillian of Deep Purple (who were one of many awesome bands of the time that they gigged with). If you want some proto metal hard rock that actually lives up to the hype, here you go.

This group apparently has the drummer from Hella in it, but that should not be either an encouragement or detractor from you checking this out. Sylvus - The Beating of Black Wings + S/T

I think this whole Bandcamp thing is a really great idea. Much more simple and less eye-wounding than the battered shell once known as Myspace, it also puts downloads in the hands of the artist. You can choose to charge for your songs, place a "name your own price" option on them, or simply give them away for free.
With that said, after Rurnt's recent, great Consular post, I got the idea to start featuring more releases on Bandcamp that are available for free or on the sliding-scale option. This is the first of those.

Canada's Sylvus are a band that I couldn't help but fall in love with instantly. They play a brand of black metal that any fan of the genre should find immediately inviting. Somewhere between the sounds of second wave norway and the more recent, forest-dwelling atmospheres of Canada and the Pacific Northwest. Here they unleash two releases worth of beautiful, icy viciousness.

The riffs are heavier. the vocals are more unhinged, and they throw a few little curve balls in there just to keep you on your toes. I can't wait for this to get pressed on LP just so I can break it and use the shards to slit my wrist. Why? I recently checked this out due to a discussion of its upcoming re-issue on Svark Records. During this discussion, it was called the best Finnish album ever. This, of course, make me curious. After digging around the 'net, I finally found a copy. I don't know if I would consider it the best output from Finland, but it definitely is fucking good! If you like your riffs to be in the vein of the NWOBHM output of the early 80s, then give this a shot. Fucking good time, hell raisin', listen to it at your shitty job, rockin' riffs. If that sounds like it's up your alley, download this NOW!

PS... I know that a band can't be considered NWOBHM if they are not from Britain, but I use that tag because if you dig that sort of thing, you might dig this sort of thing.
